<授業のねらい>
This course is designed to further introduce students to intermediate level Engineering English. Students will continue working in groups giving presentations on Engineering-related subjects. Students will further develop their communicative competence in Engineering English, critical thinking, and discussion skills. Students are expected to research, prepare for and contribute to weekly class discussions and complete all assigned tasks.

<受講にあたっての前提条件>
There are no prerequisites, although completion of the second year English courses and the first semester course will help prepare students for this course.

<具体的な到達目標>
Use Engineering English in international environments and teams.
Students will practice all four skills in English and will further develop their intermediate skills in discussing technical topics in small groups, writing short reports, and giving presentations using Powerpoint.

<授業計画及び準備学習>
Week 1 Student orientation/Course overview (Prepare for next week by previewing Unit 9)
Week 2 Unit 9: Materials; strength, stiffness and toughness, properties and processes (Prepare for next week by previewing Unit 10 on pressure and pumps)
Week 3 Unit 10: Air and Water; pressure, hydrofoils, pumps and compressors, forces in air and water (Prepare for next week by completing handouts)
Week 4 Unit 11: Heat in Engineering; temperatures, heat, heat engine cycles, heat production and transfer (Prepare for next week by completing handouts)
Week 5 Unit 12: Light and Sound in Engineering; frequency and wavelength, lasers, sound and light (Prepare for next week by reviewing units 9-12)
Week 6 Review and Test of Units 9-12
Week 7 Presentations
Week 8 Unit 13: Manufacturing in Engineering; cost engineering, manufacturing processes (Prepare for next week by completing handouts)
Week 9 Unit 14: Codes and Standards in Engineering; codes and standards, ISO ratings, certification (Prepare for next week by completing handouts)
Week 10 Unit 15: Helping to Save the Planet; trends, greenhouse effect, geo-engineering, carbon cycle and storage (Prepare for next week by reviewing units 13-15)
Week 11 Unit Reviews and Test Units 13-15
Week 12 Presentation Preparation and Engineering the Future: Engineering ideas in Film (Prepare for presentations)
Week 13 Presentations
Week 14 Course Review

This class is taught entirely in English.

Assessment: Writing Tasks 10%, Presentations 30%,
Participation/Leadership/Homework 20%, Tests 40%
