＜授業のねらい及び具体的な達成目標＞: The aim of this course is to improve students' general reading abilities to engage textual material written in English. The focus will be on developing students' aptitudes in contemplating texts so that they will be better prepared to form opinions, arguments and conclusions based on the content presented in the texts. To achieve these goals, attention will be given to nurturing students' abilities to infer meanings from texts and to utilize critical thinking techniques in the analysis process. Students will be expected to display their skills in the above techniques in English, both orally and in written form.
＜授業計画及び準備学習＞: 授業は、基本的に2週に１課のペースで進めていく予定です。１週目には、トピックに関する背景知識を補う活動や重要語彙の確認、読み方のコツの確認といった Pre-Reading の活動、本文の1/2 程度をCDリスニング、ペアでの音読、シャドーイングなど音声中心の活動から読解作業へと進めていきます。読解に関しては、毎回本文をいくつかのセクションに分けて、任意の学生に説明・重要表現などをピックアップしてもらう形で進めていく予定です。２週目には、本文の残りの部分の読解をして、その後練習問題で内容理解の定着を図ります。なお、毎回授業の残りの時間(１５～２０分程度)を利用して、TOEIC の演習を行います。

＜成績評価方法及び水準＞: 評価は、平常点(小テスト、出欠、課題、授業中の態度など)と学期末試験で、３：７の割合とします。

副教材として、Takayuki Ishiiほか著、Listening Promoter for the TOEIC Test (成美堂、2013)
＜オフィスアワー＞: 授業の前後１０分間講師室にて
＜学生へのメッセージ＞: 毎回、辞書(紙製か電子辞書)を持参すること。携帯電話の辞書機能は使用不可。随時必要に応じてプリントを配布する。
