△Short Paper Writing[1A03]

＜授業のねらい及び具体的な達成目標＞

The aim of this course is to develop the students’ abilities to write short papers in English (3 to 5 paragraphs). Attention will be given to formulating thesis statements, introduction paragraphs, supporting idea paragraphs, and concluding paragraphs.

＜授業計画及び準備学習＞

This course operates as a workshop where students, under the supervision of the instructor, write papers in English.

Day 1. Guidance： Getting oriented in the nature of this course
Preparation: Reflect on your own experience in writing, both in English and Japanese
Day 2. Introduction to English writing 1: Understanding the basic elements of writing
Preparation: an assignment will be announced in class
Day 3. Introduction to English writing 2: Understanding what "paragraph" is
Preparation: an assignment will be announced in class
Day 4. Writing on the topic of Deforestation 1:
Preparation: an assignment will be announced in class
Day 5. Writing on the topic of Deforestation 2:
Preparation: an assignment will be announced in class
Day 6. Writing on the topic of Biotechnology 1:
Preparation: an assignment will be announced in class
Day 7. Writing on the topic of Biotechnology 2:
Preparation: rewrite the paper
Day 8. Writing on the topic of English and Internationalization 1:
Preparation: an assignment will be announced in class
Day 9. Writing on the topic of English and Internationalization 2:
Preparation: rewrite the paper
Day 10. Writing on the topic of Aging Society 1:
Preparation: an assignment will be announced in class
Day 11. Writing on the topic of Aging Society 2:
Preparation: rewrite the paper
Day 12. Writing on the topic of the Seniority System 1:
Preparation: an assignment will be announced in class
Day 13. Writing on the topic of the Seniority System 2:
Preparation: rewrite the paper
Day 14. Final paper: Review
Preparation: Write the final paper
Day 15. Consolidation: Getting the overall feedback on the work done during the course
Preparation: Reflect on the work done during the course

＜成績評価方法及び水準＞

Students will be assessed by the quality of work they do in class and by how well they have improved during the course. The quality of the paper handed in at the end of the term will be considered as the final assessment.

＜学生へのメッセージ＞

Only those students who are academically motivated are welcomed in this course. They are to attend every class with their homework done. Although this course can be a half-year course, it is advised that the students take Academic Writing in Fall Semester as well since what is done in each semester is supplemented by the other.
