<授業のねらい及び具体的な達成目標>
The primary goal of this course is to encourage you to enjoy reading English. The secondary goals are to improve your reading comprehension and to increase your reading speed.

There are two very different ways to study reading.

The first way to study reading is called INTENSIVE READING. You probably already know how to read intensively. When you read intensively, you read slowly and carefully. You hold a pencil in your hand and make notes on the paper as you read. You look up every word you do not know in a dictionary. You figure out the grammatical structure of every sentence. It takes a very long time to read a very short passage.

We will NOT do any intensive reading.

We will do the second way to study reading that is called EXTENSIVE READING. You probably have never read extensively before. When you read extensively, you read quickly. You cannot hold a pencil in your hands. You cannot take notes on the paper as you read. You cannot look up words you do not know in a dictionary. You do not worry about the grammatical structure of every sentence. It takes a shorter time to read a longer passage. There are two purposes for extensive reading. First is to create the habit of reading at a more natural speed, developing confidence in your abilities to read and to intuit the meaning of what you read. Second is to enjoy reading, deriving pleasure from understanding what you have read.

If you read intensively in this class, you will NOT be able to pass this course.

You must read extensively.

<授業計画及び準備学習>
In this course, you will read. You should get in the habit of reading every day. After each reading, you will complete a short written report on what you have read. In class, you will talk to the professor about what you have read.

You will be able to select from 34 different books to read. There are 27 picture books. There are also 7 books of 73 short stories. Each reading has a corresponding number of points. For example, if you read Click Clack Moo, which is written for a native-speaking three-year-old child, you will get 16 points. If you read Lucha Libre, which is written for a native-speaking nine-year-old child, you will get 114 points. If you read all eight chapters of Rosa's Singing Grandfather, you will get 392 points. If you read one (1) of the short stories from Pete Seeger's Storytelling Book, you will get 68 points. After you finish each reading, you must complete a short book report to get your points. It is possible to get more than 7000 points. You must get at least 3000 points during the Spring Term to pass this course (an average of 200 points per week)!

Class time will be used to read, to write book reports, and to talk with the professor about what you have read.

<成績評価方法及び水準>
Your grade in this course depends on how much you read. The more you read, the higher your grade. Please give me your finished written book reports every week.
