<授業のねらい及び具体的な達成目標>
This is a seminar course that examines the similarities and differences between varying cultural systems. Current cultural and critical theories will be introduced, and the students will be encouraged to implement these in examining cultural constructions. The aim is for the students to further develop their international hodological maps and improve their techniques in intercultural communication.

<授業計画及び準備学習>
The course will begin by examining the foundations of Western European concepts and how these have developed into the current academic theories that are utilized to analyse cultural constructions. From this point, the course will then focus on applying these theoretical methods in order to deconstruct myriad cultural systems.
Weeks 1 through 4 Saussurian and Derridian theories.
Weeks 5 through 7 application of Saussurian and Derridian theories to foundational cultural constructions.
Weeks 8 through 12 Lacanian and Foucaultian theories.
Weeks 13 through 15 application of aforementioned theories to Western cultural constructions related to patriarchy, imperialism, economics, religion, etc.
Weeks 16 through 20 review of first semester theories and introduction to Heidegger, Baudrillard, Negri, Hardt, and Welsh.
Weeks 21 through 27 application of theories taught in course to current global situations concerning multiculturalism, globalization, world market formation, international relations, and ethnic, religious, and ideological conflicts.
Weeks 28 through 30 consideration of future development of global and regional landscapes and focus on final projects.

<成績評価方法及び水準>
Grades will be based on participation, homework, quizzes, and short papers.

No text is required for this course.
