○Reading Skills in English IA[3436]

＜授業のねらい及び具体的な達成目標＞

The aim of this course is to improve the students’ general reading abilities in English. The focus will be on developing basic comprehension skills: identifying topics, supporting ideas and conclusions. In order to achieve this, the structural formations of short readings will be analyzed. Attention will be given to enhancing the students’ scanning techniques to identify key points and to increasing the students’ reading speeds. Students will be expected to display their skills in the above techniques in English, both orally and in written form.

＜授業計画＞

毎回まとまった内容の英文を、その構造に留意しつつ読み進めていく。テキストの英文について受講者は語彙、フレーズ、文構造、パラグラフの要旨について、どこを聞かれても答えられるように十分な予習をすることが望ましい。文法事項の確認、語彙の補強のために、授業内の一定の時間を用いて、適宜、小テストを行う。また必要に応じて別途プリントを使用する場合もある。

＜成績評価方法及び水準＞

平常点（授業内の発表、小テスト）を30％、2回の定期テスト（中間試験、期末試験）を70％として総合的に評価し、60点以上の者を合格とする。

英語をしっかり「読む」ということは、時間と労力を必要とします。が、その分、得られるものも大きいでしょう。英語というフィルターを通して、異なる文化圏を見つめるよい機会になれば、と思います。授業には毎回、必ず辞書を持参してきてください。
