<授業のねらい及び具体的な達成目標>
The aim of this course is to improve the students’ general reading abilities in English. The focus will be on developing basic comprehension skills: identifying topics, supporting ideas and conclusions. In order to achieve this, the structural formations of short readings will be analyzed. Attention will be given to enhancing the students’ scanning techniques to identify key points and to increasing the students’ reading speeds. Students will be expected to display their skills in the above techniques in English, both orally and in written form.

<授業計画>
This class will focus on developing the variety of skills needed to enable the student to become an autonomous and confident reader of English language material. Skills that will be given consideration are: reading for main ideas; reading for detailed information; inferring meaning from context; active reading; understanding and following English phrasing; and internalization of read material. There will be short in class readings and readings assigned for homework. The students will be required to demonstrate their understanding of texts in both oral and written form.

<成績評価方法及び水準>
Grades will be based on homework, short papers, quizzes, tests and class participation.

The goal of this class is to improve your reading ability in English. Since this class will be conducted in English your ability to speak English and to understand spoken English will also improve. To do this your participation in the class is essential. As learners of English you are expected to make mistakes, so do not be concerned with making mistakes. You should focus on practicing your English. If you do this, your English will improve.
