＜授業のねらい及び具体的な達成目標＞

The aim of this course is to improve the students’ general reading abilities in English. The focus will be on developing basic comprehension skills: identifying topics, supporting ideas and conclusions. In order to achieve this, the structural formations of short readings will be analyzed. Attention will be given to enhancing the students’ scanning techniques to identify key points and to increasing the students’ reading speeds. Students will be expected to display their skills in the above techniques in English, both orally and in written form.

この授業では、以下に挙げるテキストを通して、「人間と科学」の関わりについて学習をします。テキストの中で筆者のIsaac Asimovは人間的な立場に立ち、宇宙・物理・環境問題などの科学の世界を分かりやすく解説しています。理系の皆さんには
馴染み易い内容と言えるでしょう。
授業はあくまでも英語の授業ですので、精読を行います。テキストの英文を通して、科学英語の独特の表現などを身につけ、高学年時に読むことになる英語の論文の理解に備えたいと考えています。前期は第10章まで読み進めます。
