○Basic Reading Skills I[4119]

＜授業のねらい及び具体的な達成目標＞

The aim of this course is to improve the students’ general reading abilities in English. The focus will be on developing basic comprehension skills: identifying topics, supporting ideas and conclusions. In order to achieve this, the structural formations of short readings will be analyzed. Attention will be given to enhancing the students’ scanning techniques to identify key points and to increasing the students’ reading speeds. Students will be expected to display their skills in the above techniques in English, both orally and in written form.

＜授業計画＞

近代科学の発展に貢献したさまざまな科学者の伝記を読みながら、文法、構文、イディオム、語彙など英文読解に必要な知識を習得する。
毎回、教科書に沿って一つのセクションごとに、リーディング、要約、内容確認をしたあと、英語のクロスワードパズルを解きながら、大事な語彙や慣用表現を覚える。

＜成績評価方法及び水準＞

定期試験50％、各章ごとに行う小テスト50％をもとに成績を算出し、60点以上を合格とする。

必ず予習をして毎回の授業を大切にしてほしい。知らない単語はすべて調べておくように。教室へはいつも辞書を持参のこと。
