＜授業のねらい及び具体的な達成目標＞

The aim of this course is to develop the students’ abilities to utilize a critical thinking approach to the analysis of texts written in English. Attention will be given to formulating arguments for discussion and debate based on the content of the reading materials.

＜授業計画＞

This class will focus on developing the variety of skills needed to enable the student to become an autonomous and confident reader of English language material. Skills that will be given consideration are: reading for main ideas; reading for detailed information; inferring meaning from context; active reading; understanding and following English phrasing; and internalization of read material. There will be short in class readings and readings assigned for homework. The students will be required to demonstrate their understanding of texts in both oral and written form.

＜成績評価方法及び水準＞

Grades will be based on homework, short papers, quizzes, tests and class participation.

Textbook to be announced by July.

Hachioji Campus: Mondays 8:30-9:10
Shinjuku Campus: Wednesdays & Thursdays 11:30-12:45 and by appointment

The goal of this class is to improve your reading ability in English. Since this class will be conducted in English your ability to speak English and to understand spoken English will also improve. To do this your participation in the class is essential. As learners of English you are expected to make mistakes, so do not be concerned with making mistakes. You should focus on practicing your English. If you do this, your English will improve.
